Tricks of the Trade

Project Management
As a special education teacher, I've had to juggle several "projects" on an almost daily basis. These projects just look a bit different than the corporate world. I managed 15-23 learners per school year, this entailed evaluation of their needs, designing/developing interventions to meet their needs, implementing the lessons, and evaluating their effectiveness on an ongoing basis, this process is identical to ADDIE and Action Mapping Instructional Design models. Additionally, I met with cross functional teams routinely to ensure compliance to the plan as written. I used spreadsheets to track meetings, evaluations, and due dates to ensure compliance to state laws.
Effective Communication
I am an expert at communication and relationship building with all stakeholders. I am able to communicate in a way that builds respect and shows I value every person's contribution to the team. I was responsible for facilitating all IEP (Individualized Education Plan) meetings for every learner. These meetings took place annually and included parents, local agency representative, school psychologist, general education teachers, and all special education teachers involved. This skill will prepare me for communication with clients, SME's, fellow Learning & Design colleagues, and upper management.
Lesson Design
In my training as an interventionist, I learned how to evaluate the current programs used by the district to determine what aspect of student need was missing. For instance, if a program lacked enough phonemic awareness, we could layer in a quick lesson to help with that aspect and then continue on without affecting the efficacy of the program used. This skill is essential to evaluate the current learning content used by organizations and learning/module/storyboard that I have created and to ensure it contains and meets all requirements from the SME.

Staff Training Facilitation
As exceptional student education teacher (ESE Teacher), it was my role to design and lead staff training annually to assist in helping the general education teachers understand how students with disabilities learn.
